Abstract

Showcasing research on acoustofl uidic shape-based cell separation from Professor Jinsoo Park’s Multiscale Flow Control Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Chonnam National University, Gwangju, Republic of Korea Acoustofl uidic separation of oblate spheroids from spheres using acoustic radiation torque and force Shape-dependent acoustofl uidic manipulation off ers a label-free method for separation of healthy and abnormal red blood cells. We show selective separation of oblate spheroids and spherical cells using acoustic radiation torque and force. Geometry-dependent rotation and migration behaviour under acoustic fi elds enable effi cient separation of similarly sized cells. Inspired by pathological RBC shape variation, we present an acoustofl uidic framework for precise shape-based cell separation with diagnostic, hematological analysis and screening applications.
